This expedition is for experienced travellers and combines the Khibiny Mountains and the frozen Lake Umbozero (up to 150 km per day). Once you conquer the challenge of the Kukisvumchorr et Uumbozerski Passes, you arrive to the land of reindeer herders. Here you can go for a reindeer-drawn sleigh ride and try your hand at ice fishing for perch and brown bullhead. You will travel back by a different route after an ascension 1,000 m. Snow partrides will take flight in the bright light of your snowmobile as most of the trip is done in the dusky light of the polar night. Khibiny Mountains are located on the 67th parallel north, which is the best place in Western Russia to see the Northern Lights.
Fly to Murmansk. Your driver is waiting for you at the airport with a sign “Artel Troika”. Breakfast at the airport and transfer to Kirovsk near the Khibiny Mountains (210 km, 4 hours). The main road of the Kola Peninsula crosses the rocky tundra and deserted plains along the Barents Sea and is punctuated by the occasional thicket of pine trees. The road reaches Apatity and Kirovsk, at the foot of the Khibiny Mountains that 1,200 m above sea level. Settle in at the hotel. Dinner. Night in Kirovsk.
Meet your guide at reception at 9.30 am. Transfer to the departure point (15 min). Safety briefing at 10 am, snowmobile lesson, choice of equipment (snowsuit, insulated boots, gloves, balaclava and helmet). Departure towards the mountain on your snowmobile along the following course: Kirovsk – Umbozersky Pass – Lake Umbozero - Lake Lovozero (130 km). A dinner of hot tea and sandwiches is provided during the excursion. Accommodation in a guest house on Cape Yulinskaya Salma on the shores of Lake Lovozero.
Breakfast. Preparation for departure. Ride through the Seydozero reserve, which is sacred to the Sami People (50–60 km). Surrounded by rock faces up to 200 m high, this area is worshipped by the local reindeer herders. Visit a small reindeer farm to discover the daily lives of herders and take reindeer-drawn sleigh ride. Return to the guest house. Russian banya. Night on the shores of Lake Lovozero.
Breakfast. Briefing on the success of your ice fishing escapades. Snowmobile ride to Khibiny along a different route (150 km). If the weather is good enough, you can ride up to the summit of Mount Mannepakh (950 m above sea level). From here, stunning views over Lake Umbozero and the Khibiny Mountains. Cross the Partomchorrsky Pass (800 m above sea level). Return to Kirovsk. Dinner in a cafe. Transfer to the hotel in Kirovsk (15 min). Night in Kirovsk.
Breakfast at the hotel. Meet your chauffeur in the lobby and transfer to Murmansk airport (210 km, 4 hours).
The capital of this polar region is the only port in the world to host a flotilla of nuclear icebreakers. Nowadays, boats leave Murmansk and Dudinka at the delta of the Yenisey River.
