Terem in Astashovo

Find out more

A short trip along the historic track of Trans-Siberian railway with the accommodation in wooden house, so called «terem», deep in the taiga forest. It’s off the beaten route for your trip from Moscow to St. Petersburg.

Head to the north by overnight train either from Moscow or Yaroslavl, cross the mighty Volga River and dense forest of Kostroma region. From a small railway station in Galich following the unpaved road you will be transferred to a wooden terem in Astashovo village. This unique house was built at the end of 19th century. After the intense renovation that took 7 years this house became one of the most stylish boutique hotels in Russia. It’s a fine example of neo-Russian style of 19th century architecture. The terem is situated deep in the forest, 11 km away from the nearest village.

Having spent a night in terem the next day you will have a day full of activities. In winter it’s a snowmobile tour to neighbouring villages. In summer you will take a walk in the forest with a ranger to learn more about the northern taiga forest and to get to see wild animals footprints.
