- Duration 1 day
The warm season on Olkhon starts when the rhododendrons blossom, from around May to September. During this period the weather is reliably good, but the island is still steeped in two very different worlds. On the one hand, the eastern shore is made up of flat steppe, golden beaches, delightful bays like that of Maloe More, rocky islands and their bird colonies. On the western shore, it is stony, forested and mountainous. Here, from an altitude of 500 metres, you will be perfectly positioned to admire the azure abyss of Great Baikal, before hiking down to one of the bays quietly to catch a glimpse of the secretive Nerpa seals.
Departure from Irkutsk or Listvyanka (+/- 70 km, 1h journey) in direction of Olkhon, starting from the taiga before reaching the arid steppe. Private minivan to Olkhon Island (300 km, 6h journey). Once past Irkutsk, the landscape changes and opens onto steppe where, in the distance, you can see pastured herds. Stop at the Buryat village of Ust-Urda for a traditional local lunch. Back on the road, you will cross the “Doors of Olkhon” by ferry. 3o minutes later, you will set foot in Khuzhir, the main village on the island, where you will stay in a private hotel.
The Tazheransky Steppe runs along the road that leads to the Small Sea and Olkhon Island. This location has a unique microclimate and pre-glacial flora.
Take a 4X4 excursion to Cape Khoboy, a sacred place for shamanism at the extreme north of the island (3h journey). Multiple stops will allow you to get out and admire the views, beaches, sheer ochre cliffs and mountains on the other side of the Little Sea. From the summit, you will have a 360° view that is breathtaking. Lunch outside. Your meals will be warmed by your guide and served with hot tea. Return to the village.
Contrary to Khuzhir, Uzury is a remote and calm place with direct access to Great Baikal. It is an ideal location for hiking because so few people live there.
This 4x4 UAZ excursion will take you through steppe and forests with short stops for walks and photos. Your guide will bring you to South Olkhon and tell you stories of the solitary birch tree that grows on the steppe.
From Khuzhir, take a boat to the Maloe More Bay for beautiful views of the Chamanka Rock, the Primorskiy Mountains and the small islands that dot the coast.
After breakfast, you will have free time to explore the Burkhan Rock, a famous symbol of Baikal. Afternoon departure to Irkutsk in a private minivan (300 km, 6h journey). Night at the hotel.
