Contrary to trips in South Karelia, the Murmansk region has very few inhabitants and snowmobile expeditions are more extreme. The snow cover can sometimes reach 3 m and the traveller must be ready to experience polar nights: the sun doesn’t rise here for 41 days from December 2nd to January 12th. During this period, people travel by snowmobile in the moonlight or under stars, bathed in the light of the aurora borealis. In the mountains, you will spend the night in a guest house that can only be accessed by snowmobile during the winter months.
Fly to Murmansk. Your driver is waiting for you at the airport with a sign “Artel Troika”. Breakfast at the airport and transfer to Kirovsk near the Khibiny Mountains (210 km, 4 hours). The main road of the Kola Peninsula crosses rocky tundra and deserted plains along the Barents Sea and is punctuated by the occasional thicket of pine trees. The road reaches Apatity and Kirovsk, at the foot of the Khibiny Mountains that 1,200 m above sea level. Settle in at the hotel. Dinner. Night in Kirovsk.
Meet your guide at reception at 9.30 am. Transfer to the departure point (15 min). Safety briefing at 10 am, snowmobile lesson, choice of equipment (snowsuit, insulated boots, gloves, balaclava and helmet). Departure towards the mountain on your snowmobile along the following course: Botanical Garden – Ramsay’s Pass – Kukisvumchorr Pass – « Kuelporr » shelter (50–60 km per day). Stay in a double room and lunch in the mountain shelter. Snowmobile circuit on Mount Kukisvumchorr. Evening at the banya (Russian sauna) with the option of refreshing yourself in the ice hole dug in the nearby river. Homemade dinner and evening by the fire.
Breakfast at the shelter and departure for a trip across several passes (Rischorr North – Partomchorrsky). Lunch. Snowmobile across the Eastern Petrelius Pass (883 m above sea level) with views over Malaya Belyïa. On the way, you will discover ice-capped rocks, flat summits and valleys that can be up to 3 m deep in snow (60–70 km per day). Return to Kirovsk around 18h00. Transfer to the hotel in Kirovsk. Dinner. Night in Kirovsk.
Breakfast at the hotel. Meet your chauffeur in the lobby and transfer to Murmansk airport (210 km, 4 hours).
The capital of this polar region is the only port in the world to host a flotilla of nuclear icebreakers. Nowadays, boats leave Murmansk and Dudinka at the delta of the Yenisey River.
